Brakes squealing or grinding? What it means and what to do
Administrator
Brake noise isn't always serious, but some sounds mean stop and check now.
Common sounds
- High-pitched squeal when braking: many pads have a small metal tab that squeals when the pads are nearly worn. Have them checked soon.
- Squeal that comes and goes, with plenty of pad left: often dust, glazed pads or missing anti-squeal shims. A clean and the right fitting usually fixes it.
- Grinding or scraping: the pad is likely worn to the metal and is cutting into the disc. Stop driving and get it fixed now.
- Squeak in the morning that goes after a few stops: usually light rust on the discs from overnight moisture. Normal.
Other warning signs
- A soft or sinking brake pedal: possible leak or air in the system. Don't drive until checked.
- The car pulling to one side when braking.
- Vibration through the pedal or steering: often warped discs.
- The brake warning light on with the handbrake released.
Maintenance
- Have pads and discs checked every 10,000 km.
- Replace brake fluid every two years; old fluid absorbs water and can boil on long descents such as the escarpment.
- Replace pads in pairs (both front or both rear).
