Choosing a garage you can trust: questions to ask
Administrator
A good mechanic saves you money for years. These questions help you find one, and keep the relationship honest.
Before the work
- Can I have an itemised quote? Parts and labour listed separately, with part brands named.
- Genuine, OEM or aftermarket? Ask which you're getting and the price difference (see our parts guide).
- Will you call me before doing anything extra? Agree that no extra work is done without your approval.
- Do you know this make? Some cars, such as Subarus, hybrids and European models, need specialist tools and knowledge.
After the work
- Ask for the old parts back.
- Get a receipt that lists what was done, the parts fitted and the mileage.
- Ask what warranty they give on parts and labour.
Good signs
- They explain the problem in plain language and show you the worn part.
- They tell you what can wait as well as what can't.
- They keep records of your vehicle. Garages on CarLog can log each job straight to your vehicle's history for you to approve.
